How do I know how fit I am or what my fitness level is?

I'm going to the gym tonight. There's heaps of machines so if you could tell me which machine would determine my fitness level.

    No calorie counting here just try to eat five times a day(about every 3 hours)

    and make sure every meal and snack has these five things:



    Lean protein-like grilled chicken or fish ,egg whites,or nonfat cheese



    Healthy Carbs - like brown rice,Whole-Wheat pasta or Whole Wheat Bread ,or Whole grain cereal



    Fiber-Which you'll get from fruits and veggies and healthy carbs



    Healthy Fats- Which you can find in Olive Oil and fish ,like Salmon





    Here is an Example of FIVE meals on one day



    BREAKFAST :



    OATMEAL BERRY PANCAKES



    3/4 cup egg whites

    2/3 cup choped strawberries fresh or frozen

    1/2 rolled oats

    1/2 tsp.sugar substitute cooking oil spray

    1/2 cup of nonfatyogurt

    1/4 cup of Blueberries



    Step 1. Beat the egg whites ,Strawberries ,rolled oats ,and Sugar substitue until smooth



    Step 2. Coat a small nonstick skillet with cooking spray and heat it.ladle 1/4 cup of batter into skillet.cook until batter is set around the edges of the pan(you'll start to see little bubbles),then push it toward the center with a spatula.Cook until batter sets in the center.

    turn the pancake over and cook for 1 min.

    Step 3.Repeat with the remaining batter .Then put the pancakes on a plate and top it with Yogurt and Blueberries.







    MIDMORNING SNACK:



    Apple Wedges with cinnamon cream :



    Serves 1 :



    1 small apple,cored and cut into wedges



    1/2 tsp.freshly squeezed lemom juice

    1/2 cup nonfat sour cream

    1/3 cup of nonfat cream cheese,softened

    1tsp. ground cinnamon

    1tsp.of sugar or agave syrup

    Remember Small Apple



    *LUNCH*



    Mixed Greens with turkey and Cheese quesadillas



    2oz.(about two slices) of deli-style fat-free turkey or natural turkey with no preservatives



    1 8" Whole -Wheat tortilla



    1/4 cup shredded nonfat mozzarela cheese

    cooking oil spray and Olive oil on the pan



    1 1/2 cups mixed greens



    1/2 cup of your favorite nonfat dressing or italian



    Step 1. Place Turkey slices on one side of the tortilla .Sprinkle with cheese and fold tortilla in half Press tightly to secure filling



    Step.2 Coat a non-stick skillet with cooking spray and heat the skillet.

    Cook the tortilla for one minute on each side or until cheese is melted .Slide the tortilla on to a cutting board .Slice into three or four triangles.Set aside.



    Toss the mixed greens (salad) with the dressing . Place them in the center of the plate Arrange the quesadilla traingles around the plate.Enjoy!



    MID-AFTERNOON SNACK



    Chicken and Swiss bites

    serves 1 :



    2 slices of Deli style fat free Chicken breast ,THINLY sliced



    2 ounces nonfat Swiss cheese ,cut into strips



    2 multigrain crackers



    2 tsp.Salsa



    Step 1. Roll the chicken slices around the swiss cheese,and arrange on top of crackers.



    Step 2.Garnish with Salsa!





    ***DINNER ****



    CHICKEN STIR-FRY



    Serves 1:



    3 ounces skinless ,boneless chicken breast ,cut into strips



    2 1/2 cups thinly sliced carrots



    1 1/2 cups snow peas,stems removed



    1 cup bean sprouts cooking oil spray or a little olive oil



    1/2 tbsp. sesame seeds



    1/2 tbsp.garlic powder

    1/4 cup low-sodium Soy sauce



    Step 1 . Coat a wok or pan with cooking spray and some olive oil and heat it.ADD the Chicken strips and stir fry for two minutes .Add the carrots ,snow peas ,bean sprouts,sesame seeds,and garlic powder . Stir Fry for one minute .Add the soy sauce and cook for one minute.



    Step 2. Ladle it into a shallow bowl and garnish it with a few additional sesame seeds .





    THESE ARE FIVE MEALS IN ONE DAY



    Don't Diet Just EAT HEALTHY And make sure it is small portions and eat 5 meals a day.



    Strict dieting will only make you tired and cranky and over eat later !

I know running and jogging result in massive weight loss. Is there any exercise I can do that will improve my fitness and stamina but won't make me lose that much weight? If you add any kind of exercise, you are going to burn more calories, so you'll need to eat more! Add carbs (to fuel your body during exercise so you aren't immediately burning fat), and protein (which is calorie dense and will help you maintain your muscle). Just adding a big glass of milk after exercise can help you with this.



    To get your heart and lungs in shape, you don't need to do a ton of exercise. Try 20-30 minutes 2-3 times a week. If that doesn't feel like enough, add some walking (on hills, on a treadmill w/ an incline, or with lunges in between).



    A lot of people don't realize that when you start losing weight -- a lot of what you lose is muscle (after a few initial pounds of water weight, which is no big deal). Muscle loss happens even if you're losing that weight by exercising. So make SURE you add strength training to maintain your muscle. (It will be a lot harder to get back than fat). You can do this without equipment by googling some body weight and core exercises like squats, lunges, pushups, planks, and crunches. (You can even do JUST these kinds of strength exercises, with some jumping jacks, jogging in place, or jumping rope in between sets, and some stretches at the end, and you'll improve your fitness in a really well rounded way. Squats and other leg exercise do a surprisingly great job of getting your heart rate up.).



    Running and jogging do create a very high calorie burn, and also tend to cause you to lose muscle if you do a lot, but they are a great/fast way to get in shape. You can also try anaerobic exercises (very intense exercises you can't maintain for very long, like jump roping or short sprints). These do burn a lot of calories and rev your metabolism (eat!!), but they don't break down fat the same way other exercises do (like the elliptical, jogging). And they WORK your heart and lungs for great fitness and stamina in a faster time.

Running and jogging build up a large amount of muscle in your legs which results is gaining muscle mass. Muscles weigh If you have no fat to burn, you can't lose it. I would do things that build up muscle mass such as weight lifting (low weight, a lot of reps). Also, you could do classes such as yoga, and pliates to strengthen your core. Cardio is an important part of health, so I wouldn't count it out completly.

    What the hell people?!?! This place is dope as hell! You got one guy complaining about how he can't swim and somehow thats their fault and you got another person complaining how its too packed, here's a hint, don't go between 5-7 pm during the week that's when everyone goes.     This place has got the best facilities in a fitness center i've ever seen. And for that price?!? its only 49 a month, although the sign-up fee is like 200, (which is a little absurd), but i plan on being a member for a long time so it'll all even out i guess.     How do I improve my fitness/strength over the summer holidays so I can be prepared for rugby pre-season?

    School holiday's have just started and I was wandering if anyone had any suggestions as to how i could improve my fitness and strength over the summer holidays for when the rugby pre-season starts. I am 14, play in the 2nd row and I have access to a rowing and cycling machine as well as the bleep test, I would appreciate answers using these but also sets of sit ups, press ups and running etc...How do I improve my fitness/strength over the summer holidays so I can be prepared for rugby pre-season?There is a great training program put out by the Concept2 rowing maching makers (I am in no way affiliated). See link in sources. Rowing is a great way to not only get in rugby shape but to maintain fitness during season (especially because it's low impact which is good during season). I would mostly use your rowing machine but offset with cycling for leg strength. The cycling can help build explosive speed. Also, without access to a gym, you should jog at least 25-30 minutes four days a week to build your aerobic endurance. You can do pushups (press ups) four days a week as well. Dan Cottrell had an article about inserting press ups into training sessions for coaches that I've used with success (again, no affiliation). So, I would:

    - Rowing machine sessions (follow the guide), 4x week

    - Jogging, 4x week

    - Press ups, 4x week

    - Sit ups, "planks", leg lifts and other core exercises 6x week

    It's takes so much more than that.



    For one thing, you have to be way fit to run cross country. 3.11 miles of pain if you do it right and you're good.

    You need to have mental and physcial strength to get through an xc race. It takes months of training and just skipping a weekend of running ruins everything you've worked up to.



    Obviously physical strength is needed.. there is no time outs in cross country. When you race, you race. It's soo easy to get injured from lack or stretching or starting out too fast, etc.



    As for skills %26amp; techniques in cross country, the mental part ties in.

    For instance when you're racing and trying to pass someone, you have to stratagize how you're gonna do it. My coach told us to run up to them and stay with them for about a minute and then surge past them.

    It breaks them down a little inside, confidence and such.

    And when you are getting passed, you can either stay with them or out run them. Unless you let it get to your head. Which is normal.

    Also you need to be conscious of where you're using hte energy you have, like if you are going to hold back a little the first mile so you can run consistent splits. Or go the other way and just let it all go. Most of the time letting it all out the first mile leads to an epic fail. Unless you can keep it up.



    You HAVE to have endurance and speed in cross country. One for the distance and one for the sprint to the finish. My favorite part. : ) The finish is important because it could determine the winner of a race, if you have no energy at the end you're gonna get outsprinted.



    It takes a lot of dedication in taking care of yourself and attending every practice, and running on your on every weekend.

    3) Do not take power lifting classes ( yes its true , it will stunt your growth , epiphyseal plates at the end of your bones will seal if you lift very heavy weights , stunting your growth )



    4) Watch your diet ( eat more , just the low glycemic index foods) calculate your current weight , and your current calories , you can use a calorie counter at www.foodfocus.co.uk



    5) Weight train sensibly , do weights but sensibly , lift any weight you can do for just 10 times and you cant do any more by the 11th .

    Tennis- 25 minutes, about 110 calories.

    Golfing is a relaxing sport, but you burn the LEAST amount of calories- if you want to lose weight fast, don't even bother to play golf. If you play 45 minutes of golf, you burn about 99 calories.

Sometimes Id spice it up by putting chicken in the salad or a different kind of cheese. This helped me a lot i lost a lot of weight but i stuck to eating like this which is not exactly the most enjoyable way to eat. Just dont skip meals because that will actually slow your matabolism down and make it harder to lose weight. Hope i helped!

    I think that needs more explanation because too many people assume the term "full body workout" is just doing one



    or two exercises per body part until you have worked on your full body. That couldn't be further from what I deem a

    ripple effect throughout the entire body.



    For example: Instead of doing the traditional leg press machine and then walking over and doing the bicep curl or

    after completing the ct physical fitness test you need to write a 3-4 page essay reflection and answer some questions. this is one of them and the only thing that I can think of is to prevent diseases such as obesity and heart disease.     Your heart is a muscle and if it is`nt challenged,it becomes weak.

    I find it interesting that way back in the 60`s,Jack LaLanne was trying to promote exercise and people thought he was a (health nut).How many of these people are either dead or in a nursing home because of their lack of exercise?



    Keep your body strong,eat real food ,and you will stay healthy.

    I suppose that its such a large subject and every sport and fitness regime requires a different fitness type (for example, I run and am Runnign fit, but I can't swim very far - it requires a different style of fitness). Each then needs different stretches for the muscles being used and different conditioning exercises (again, going to running - requires general body conditioning, cycling doesn't need anything to do with the arms)

But your appearance will play a factor. If you appear to be fit this communicates a lot of positive ideas about you. The idea that you are disciplined and successful, that you will be more likely to be positive and energetic. That you will have more passion and drive. That you will be more fun to work with. It will accentuate all of the positive ways someone could view you and gloss over some of the negative ways someone could view you.



    In fact from my experience hiring and working in both construction and a professional environment, I think fitness matters even more for a white collar job than it does for a blue collar job. In the blue collar job, fitness does not always tell you who will work harder. But fitness does seem to tell you who is likely to be living a more balanced life, who will generally be happier and more social, and who will be more impressive to clients or colleagues.



    That being said there are plenty of successful people who are a joy to work with who are out of shape. In fact most people in the work force are out of shape.     In the end it is your personality and your ability to do the job well that will determine wether you are the right fit for the people hiring you. Fitness is just something in the background that is either working for you or against you. It is an image thing. But substance can outweigh image if the substance is proven. If you are positive, no one will think you are negative just because you are out of shape.

Individual exercise. Things they can do on their own. Weightlifting, hiking and biking, archery, golf or croquet, and the obstacle course, all of these are personal activities that support fitness, and can be done without teams.



    For a really fun activity that's out of the ordinary for PE classes, look into "orienteering" and "geocaching."



    I think your goal is to give them something they can latch onto as an enjoyable healthy individual hobby, rather than an organized team sport.

    Much better to learn a reality-based self defence system which is designed to put you under all those stressors...and also at night, role-playing scenarios where you are in a cramped space, crowded hallway..just getting out of your car and get jumped...how about lying under a blanket, simulating an attacker coming into your bedroom while you're asleep?. Not in a nice, open, well-lit dojo where you're only facing one person at a time...



    My personal suggestion would be krav maga for all the reasons mentioned above, and more.

    boxing will be your better choice, not because of any inherent technical superiority, but due to the training methods in daily practice. to put this in perspective, the same could be said between muaythai and karate. muaythai is superior... obviously superior. however, any karateka who train as thai boxers do are able to compare favorably. the difference is in the overall approach to training.



    boxing training is more physical and confrontational than karate. you will spend more time working at high effort levels (leading to increased fitness) and more time working against uncooperative opponents (leader to improved self defense).



    still, if you are considering either, you should try both. take an introductory class and a private lesson in each one. you will have a much clearer understanding of what you can expect from either one after that.

It means the body can recover quicker too. A healthy cardiovascular system can increase the body's VO2max as well which means the body has an increased level of physicall fitness too.

    You are going to want a program that focuses on high intensity exercises, and one that uses a lot of body weight exercises.



    Start off by working on your general conditioning by getting in a good amount of jogging (believe me, you will be doing a lot of this in the military.)



    Push-ups , crunches, pull-ups, swimming if you have a pool nearby (lake would be even better).



    There are a good choice of books that deal with work-outs designed for the military that can probably be found at your local library, or some place like amazon.com. I bought one a long while back designed for people looking to get into the US NAVY SEALS



    If you are looking for a program to do at home, look for something that focuses on the things I lists above. I posted a resource if you are interested that has some reviews of high intensity programs as well as some diet advice.

This is my first time in a fitness center, can anyone please give me some advice on what to do or what to buy?What/Where should I buy stuff I'll need for a Fitness Center?Regarding Bali Fitness, I would first look at the facilities and see what they are wearing at that center. Just for the first time, I don't know if that facility has a sauna, whirlpool, if you will be showering there and changing to clean clothing. I don't know if you want to wear weight gloves, if you need to bring your own towel, shampoo or soap. If you will just be using the treadmill and weights, you will need shoes that serve those two purposes and comfortable, sweat wicking socks. Considering your age, I think you could wear shorts and a tank top or t shirt. You need a back pack to carry your stuff in. The easiest thing is to have an orientation first. Go to the sporting goods store, buy one outfit, and carrying bag and then figure it from there. You shouldn't have a problem as you are a normal size. I would ask about the towels because if they don't give them out, you don't want to lie on the machine benches without a towel for your back due to the amount of sweat that people leave behind. There is also courtesy regarding fitness centers practiced more in the breech than in the observance, regarding sets and people waiting while someone rests between sets. also, there is courtesy regarding asking someone to spot for you when you lift a heavy weight from the bench. So, you might wish to look that up. I found one resource below. They didn't mention, always put back the weights and don't throw them down, set them down. Also, don't let them take you in a room for the hard sell if you haven't already signed a contract.     How can I chat to and eventually date a female body builder / Fitness figures? Please only serious answers.?

    I have looked into this topic online, and have only come places I would have to pay. Which I don't want to do. I know a lot of guys find this yuck but I really like it, as I use to be a body builder before, and still keep fit now. What I mean by Fitness Figure - A women that is well toned, and very fit in the fitness sense.How can I chat to and eventually date a female body builder / Fitness figures?     These people have very very regimented lifestyles and often segregate themselves from dating and the like. if they date at all it is usually another person who is just as busy as they are, or someone they had been with prior to assuming the lifestyle.



    Female bodybuilders are at a disadvantage due to their normal physiology. This means they have to commit twice as hard as men to acheive the results. They also experience hormonal shifts relative to their (we'll stretch and call it supplementation choices). This said, they are often less interested in traditional man-woman romantic dating relationships. theyre usually very dominant people with their peers and prefer those that will follow rather than lead. (if you are a lady bodybuilder and are the exception to this, dont write me a nasty letter). That said, it is difficult to date a person from this group.



    fitness competitors--- about the same minus the hormonal shifts. fitness competitors also have a very busy schedule and regimented diet life though. they spend 4 hours a day training like a pro athlete and when they come home they have their meals planned like a bodybuilder so you cant exactly take her to a nice italian restaurant for lasagna. Theyre also Alphas who like to run things and if you're not willing to "get on board the [her-name] train" she won't be bothered for long.

    What bike is best for fitness as well as toning of the body?

    I'm interested in purchasing a bike but i am unsure what bike meets my needs. i play at a high level of sport in soccer and need to keep my fitness levels high. I was curious as to which bike would accommodate my needs of keeping fit and toning the body e.g abs, arms, chest and obviously legs. I have heard of names such as a road, fitness and hybrid bike but need further advice. HELP PLEASE!What bike is best for fitness as well as toning of the body?If you enjoy cycling then get a road bike. Road bikes are the ones that you see on Tour de France and local road bike races. Spend atleast $2,000 because anything less would be a waste of money. You need to invest in your bicycle because it requires that much money to get a decent bike nowadays. Ofcourse you can get a bicycle that functions properly for much less. But I wouldnt spend any less for a bicycle because once you try a bicycle that is designed by engineers then you'd clearly see the difference between that and a $300 worthless trash they sell at Walmart.



    For a $2,000 road bike you typically get Shimano Ultegra or SRAM Rival group set for an entire bike that weighs around 17lbs. For $300 you would get a bike that shifts with a loud clunk and weigh twice that much. $2,000 road bikes are engineered by dedicated professionals. You would be amazed how quickly, smoothly and quietly the bike can shift when it is made and tuned properly.



    A typical roadie will ride atleast 20 miles per ride if not more. Some people go on 50 mile bike rides every day and these are enthusiasts and not athletes. Road cycling is fast and fun. Riding a bike should be an experience. The amount of money you are willing to spend on your bicycle will elevate your experience accordingly. If you ever rode a $5,000 road bike then you would know the difference between that and a $2,000 road bike. Some people might think it is ridiculous to spend that much money on a bike considering they can get a bike at walmart for $300. They clearly dont know anything if they think the $300 bike is the same as something that costs 20 times more.



    If you are an athlete then you should get a road bike and dont get the entry level bike because that will leave much to be desired and spending $700 to upgrade later for a $1,400 bike and then to a $2,100 bike is a waste of money when you should have just bought a $2,100 bike to begin with. A decent bike starts at $2,000 in my opinion and anything less would end up having you spend more money in the long run because you would want that more expensive bike once you test ride one at your local bike shop and realize how much better it is compared to that $700 entry level road bike.

    Well, no bike is going to tone your upper body unless you do bench presses with it. Cycling works the legs, mostly quads, and the glutes. What kind you buy will make no difference, as better bikes are lighter for racing, but if you are just looking to build muscle, you can buy a heavier bike and accomplish the same goal.
