There were a lot of differences. But the biggest difference was that the Hayes Code was still in effect. it was a system of censorship that started in 1934 and lasted until the mid-1960's. Under the code, every movie made was basically G-rated. Oh, there were dramas aimed at adults, not kids, but they were still G-rated movies. You couldn't swear or use dirty words. You couldn't show any nudity at all. Not only couldn't you show sex, you couldn't even let the audience know that a couple had sex (unless they were married, and then it was only hinted at). Married couples had to be shown sleeping in separate beds. Violence was minimized. There was a lot of shooting, but when someone was shot, there was very little or no blood. And no gore at all. You couldn't show a criminal get away with a crime. You weren't allowed to criticize the clergy or religion in general... You get the idea. All scripts had to be submitted to a censorship office, which forced them to change what they didn't like. So all scripts ended up more or less G-rated (or, at worse, a mild PG).

All of that changed when television came out. People began staying away from movie theatres to watch TV at home, so the studios realized they needed to give people something they couldn't see at home on TV. They started making special-effects films, horror movies, 3-D films, and slowly but surely, sex and violence crept onto the screen. In a few years, the studios were just ignoring the old code, and eventually replaced it with the current rating system.

As a result, all movies made between 1934 and the 1960's have a very different feel from most of today's films. What is the difference between Hollywood in the 50s and Hollywood today?Watch the movie, "The Holiday" it is explained there.
